What to expect after booking.
Paperwork.
You will receive an invitation to complete your intake paperwork through an online secure portal. This includes a typical intake form, consents, insurance and payment information, and initial assessments. It’s important to complete the paperwork to the best of your ability because it helps me see you holistically. And because I need the paperwork.
Anxiety.
You will probably have anxiety prior to our first appointment. Meeting with a new therapist is a big deal! Allow yourself to feel anxious, but know that it is a typical reaction. Plus, if you’re really anxious, it gives us plenty to talk about already.
First appointment.
Expect for me to briefly go over paperwork. I generally start off by asking for you to go over what led you to seek out therapy and I will get started pretty immediately. My goal is for you to get a feel for me as a therapist and to know what to expect going forward. Depending on what issue you are dealing with, I’ll give you a general run down of how I treat it and incorporate your feedback. Most clients leave session 1 feeling optimistic, heard, and relieved.
Going forward.
After the first appointment, it’s all gravy. We will start therapy on a weekly or every other week basis. I typically start the session by checking in with what is emotionally present first, process those emotions with you, and then we link it all to the big picture of why you came in the first place. I will give you skills to cope, but the majority of our work will be sitting in, talking about, and experiencing the emotions related to what led you to seek help, all in the safety of the therapeutic relationship.
